First-click testing evaluates the intuitiveness of a design is by tracking the first place a user clicks to complete a specific task, such as finding customer support or accessing a specific feature. This method helps identify whether your design supports the optimal user experience in line with users mental models. A correct first click increases the chances of successful task completion, while incorrect clicks highlight navigation or layout issues that need attention.
This method provides both quantitative data (like click accuracy and time taken) and qualitative insights through follow-up questions that explore users’ decisions and expectations. It’s often used in the early stages of design to refine information architecture and ensure the layout aligns with user expectations before full development.
Results are typically generated through clickmaps or heatmaps to visualize where users clicked the most.
